"
The difference between a helping hand and an outstretched palm is a twist of the wrist." Laurence Leamer Life is truly a game of give and take. Sometimes you end up being the
GIVER, where you provide aid and comfort to someone in need. There, in those private moments, you give that other person hope by showing you care. Can there be a better feeling on earth than helping a person in need?
The next moment you may actually be the
TAKER, where a kind word or a gentle touch from another brightens your day and makes you feel better. We all know how it feels to be down in the dumps, where it sometimes seems as if the entire weight of the world is on our shoulders, and then to have someone else care enough to help lighten our load. Knowing that someone cares can turn our lives around.
Caring and sharing is what real living is all about.
"You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give." Kahlil GibranWhen you help others, you help yourself. And as Jean De La Fontaine once said, "Help yourself — and Heaven will help you." The greatest gift we can bestow upon others is ourselves, doing whatever we can to enrich the lives of those around us.
Caring and sharing comes in many inward and outward expressions. Caring and sharing is sometimes a helping hand, where you reach out and lift someone up when they’ve been knocked down. Caring and sharing can also be as simple as a few words of encouragement. A pat on the back, a gentle touch, a reassuring expression of support and belief — this is what caring and sharing is all about.
"It is one of the most beautiful compensations in life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself." Ralph Waldo EmersonBut one thing is for certain, when you freely give yourself away to others, you’ll find that you have even more to give. That’s right! The more you give of yourself to help those all around you, the more you’ll get in return.
Now don’t get me wrong here, I’m not suggesting that you should ever expect a direct ‘pay back’ from those you assist here and there. That’s not what caring and sharing is all about. Far from it. The best gifts are those you give without expecting anything whatsoever in return from the person receiving it. You’ll discover that you become a better person the minute you start giving yourself away.
"The great use of life is to spend it for something that outlasts it." William James How can anyone place a price tag on bringing a smile to the face of a person who has only known sadness and despair for such a long time? Or how about those priceless moments when a kind deed or words of encouragement lights up a person’s face from end to end?
As you continue to give and give some more, you will discover that you have two helping hands — one for helping yourself, the other for helping others. And they do indeed go hand in hand. When you consistently bring hope, cheer and happiness to those you are privileged to meet daily, you’ll get even more in return. As a matter of fact, your life will get better than you ever dreamed was possible.
The Bottom Line: Give others the greatest gift you can give them: give of yourself.
